I guess you know you made my day with that email you posted about remembering me, our trip to SWAT, and the goings on that happened there. Gary Rutledge has a lot to do with remembering things that happened to me in Pakistan. Hw eill bring up something, then ask Dick Gubala(another 6981st 2-T from Elmendorf to PAS) and myself if we remembered it. Of course old Dick can't remember anything, but once in a while I can get some memories out of it. Since I didn't stay but a few months, it is hard for me to remember much, but there are a few things I will never forget. Hopefully, I will get to see you again at this years reunion. Thanks again for making my day. Mike --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mike, I remember you very well. I especially remember the trip we made in a van to Swat with, I believe, you, Rick blessing, Joe Ritacco, Joe Bodziony, myself, and others. I remember we went fishing and caught some native trout. Since we were fishing without permission, I (and a couple of others) were hauled up before a magistrate and read the riot act. They let us keep the trout, though, and we cooked them that evening. Also remember being guarded by a tribesman we hired to protect us. He let us shoot his rifle, which was an old British .303 Enfield. I still have the shell casing from the shot I fired. I remember we played the "Mamas and the Papas" all the way up from Peshawar to Swat. "California Dreamin'" all the way! I think the tape was Rick Blessing's. I actually enjoyed my tour at Peshawar very much. A historic area, an important mission, and some very good friends. Thanks for remembering, Mike. I hope to attend the reunion in 2010, and I hope you do, too.
Cheers,

Have looked through some of the archived guestbooks and found a few familiar names. Spent 2 consecutive tours at PAS and made many great friends while there. Sorry to have lost track of most some years back. Maybe some alumni will remember me. Hugh Sloan, were you in my class at I.U. (1960-61)? Also in my class at I.U. and at PAS as 203x1's were Ed Jones, Frank Smith, all working together on Charlie Flight for SSgt. Bob Johnson. Played guitar and keyboards with Ed Jones & others in a dance band, making the rounds at the Officers Club, NCO Club and EM Club during 1962-1964. Knew many ditty boppers as well, but names escape me after these many years. Hope to hear from some other PAS survivors who might remember those years. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a few photo's of a bunch of us standing in between our barracks, having a grill out. Those in the photo are myself, Wayne Bradburn, huck Blessing,Gary Rutledge, Joe Bodziony and you. Also I have another photo that includes Joe Ritacco. I only stayed at PAS for a few months because of a medical problem, but was there long enough to dislike the place. There are a lot of faces I can place in my mind, but no names come to me, except for a very few. I also noticed a Terry Hall from this site and I think he may be someone I knew. A bunch of us took a trip up to SWAT on a bus, where we encountered some pretty stiff resistance from the locals there. We were ordered to leave, quickly. I remember some of the guys were myself, Gary Rutledge, I think his name was Harold Carmichael, Terry Hall and quite a few others whom I have forgotten. The area sure was pretty, but we didn't get to stay long. I remember how cold the water in the river was. Gary and I walked along the hillside and came upon some dwellings or houses, just dug into the ground. What a way to have to live. Bill, if you remember me shoot me a line and if you don't, shoot me one anyway, and maybe I can refresh your memory and vice versa. Thanks for the memories, Jonsey --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks to google, here I am and what a pleasant surprize. Gee whiz, if I had known about the existence of the group I could have made the Orlando reunion being in Orlando. Have some very fond memories of my tour in Peshawar, especially the fact that I ordered my first new car from the GM dealership in town and it was waiting for me when I returned to the U.S. for my discharge. One of the most joyous times in my life. Looking forward to hearing more from the group.

Volunteered to go to PAS with the "understanding" that it would be a six months tour to help man during the close-out. Dave Hunt, Kentucky, Steve McConnell, Colorado, Richie Leet, NY or MA, etc. True to their word. Short when we got there. Hats off to the guys that spent the full 15-month tour. Didn't know there was a radio station until the all-star softball game between Operations and Support. Operations won. Good game. Did not recognize anything from the photos. Khyber Theater? Hell, I guess I had a bit too much to consume. The NCO club was off-limits so a bar was set up in one of the barracks. Jack, I was there when the bees came swarming over the wall while we were having a beer, cookout at the pool. That was a trip. Lots of guys got stung but I must admit, that was the fastest that I have ever run in my life. New world's record, plenty of incentive. Thanks for the memories. Hell, 40 years later it is all a blur. Peshawar, Pakistan. Thanks for the web site and caring about those that served there. Remember the poppy flowers growing in all of the flower beds that the SOBS grew and harvested! I bet they grew there opium crops on base from 1958 until the flowers were identified in 1969. Remember the SOBS sitting under the tree smoking from the six lead water pipe? $2.00 a month to have our rooms cleaned, shoes shined, what a bargain. Operations across the road. That was carefully planned. The guys giving us the signs that looked like they were asking for a cigarette but we found out later that they were waving with two fingers instead of one. Snakes, bears, monkeys. Hell, every day we crossed the road was a mini circus. I'll stop rambling but it sure was fun. I remember the elementary school, playing Little League baseball, the closed-circuit TV station, the water tower next to our house sloshing during an earthquake, the "bomb shelter" dug behind our house when the Indian Air Force started bombing nearby, Pakistani's shooting at a new arrival's house who didn't have the windows blacked out, Yousef our "house boy", and actually seeing it snow one time while we were there. Good times! Sadly, my dad passed away in 2004 and my mom in 2006.

Comments: Fantastic website. Had no idea the U.S. had a footprint near the Khyber Pass in the sixties. I was at Karamursel for a few months in the seventies, and grew up on U.S. intel bases in (West) Germany before that. Your excellent site evokes the whole cold war experience and brings back my own strong memories. Peshawar A.S. may have been short-lived in a long war, but it captures in microcosm the life many of us lived for decades. (Especially enjoyed your links to the 1969 DJ with the tunes of the time...the music really brings it all back!) Your site seems particulary poignant given that battles are still being fought now just miles from Peshawar...where Alexander the Great and Winston Churchill rode through. Amazing that the U.S., and all of you, spent time at this crossroads of history for a few years. Thanks for putting this website together and for sharing your memories with the rest of the world. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At the Orlando Reunion, Dennis Mills said he would plan a reunion in Louisville, KY. There has been recent suggestion for considering other locations. There was also a suggestion that this website be used to select a reunion location. I opted out of planning more reunions at the Maryland Reunion, so wherever the reunion is held, a planner will be needed. The planner will need to carefully plan financing the reunion because the Association has no funds for reunions. The four reunions I planned were all financially independent of the Association and, in fact, those reunions had excess funds that contributed to the Association General Fund. Good luck with your planning.

I arrived in Karachi in early January 1966 via a Pan Am flight from New York. Spent most of the week at a MAAG compound before flying up to Peshawar on PIA. I was one of the many 2T's assigned to the unit, not the favorites of lifers as I remember. My previous assignment was the 6981st in Alaska, so had several friends already at the 6937th. I was an analyst initially assigned to the Data Prep Section and later became the NCOIC of the section. I certainly would enjoy attending the next reunion. I lost almost all of my pictures. I had a great one of Dominic Ragazzo opening a steel beer can with a church key and looking ready for a fight. We had run out of beer for what seemed like a month, then Coke, then ginger ale. Were were drinking vodka and root beer until that C130 finally brought some relief. As I recall, we drank the planeload in a week and stayed dry again until the beer supply finally caught up. And to think I volunteered for that place!
Two regrets: I didn't learn Urdu or Punjabi and I didn't appreciate the wonders of the local hashish.
Oh wait- 3 regrets: I didn't go to Germany instead - where a guy could get both drunk and laid. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Comments: Good Morning,
I'm the son of CMSgt TK Smith (Deceased). I know he was at one time assigned to PAS , Pakistan, and a member of USAFSS. His rank at the time of his PAS assignment would likely have been A2C. Is there anyone out there that remembers "TK"? Or have any photos / group photos that include my father. He was about 5ft 09 inches tall, would have been about 140lbs at the time. He had blue eyes and dark hair - used Brylcream (Spelling). I remember one picture of him in uniform - tan long sleeve shirt and tan pants, blue belt, A2C rank. Any info would be appreciated. I meet people who talk about Pakistan, but who have never been there. I tell them "been there, done that." One of the most interesting times of my life, but I would not like to do it again.
I was at the 6910th in Darmstadt, Germany, when I was selected for the 2T Program. I did not relish leaving a "choice" assignment. Was at the 6910th from 1961-1963.
After my enlistment ended in June 1965, I went to work for NSA in November 1965, and ended up in England for two years.
Long story short, I left NSA, became a Baltimore City Police Officer, went to the U.S. Park Police, and then to the Office of Inspector General - Investigations, USDA. Retired at 50 years old in April 1993.
I recall from PAS, Joe Reynolds, Bill Hill, Ken Dykstrak, and his poker playing buddy "Sweet Pea." Both said they wanted to be professional gamblers. I hope they succeeded. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My memory is much foggier than used to be, but on the subject of PAS and what we called it when I was there (Dec 1960-April 1962), my best recollection is as follows -- - Col. Goerder felt a definite need to give the place a name, so he came up with Khair-Sagalie but that never really caught on -- very few called it that. - I found out the locals called it Badaber simply bcoz when we got a tonga back from the old city, Badaber is the only thing the tonga drivers clearly understood. - During my tour only a handful of guys called the place Badaber -- a few guys who often rode tongas to or from the old city -- other people had no need or desire to know that name. - We were often warned not to call the place an "Air Force base" or even a "base" but to call it an Air Force station or simply a station. - In the larger world outside Pakistan, of course, we usually referred to the place simply as Peshawar. - I don't specifically recall that we ever called the place Peshawar Air Station. We were room-mates at PAS. I was his (clueless) pinocle partner in the barracks dayroom pinocle games. Rags was no doubt the best pinocle player in 25,000 miles, he could remember every card played and gave me a hard time if I played the wrong card... hehehe. He was a great guy and we had lots of fun. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Comments: My father William P. McLester was stationed at PAS April 1961-Nov 1963. Please update the roster. My sister Marie was the first baby born at the dispensary Sept. 1963. I attended first grade at PAS. I remember the Paki thieves trying to steal my toy riding tractor. They were pulling it over the wall, while the AP's and the guys were pulling it back on our side. They quit when the AP put his gun over the wall and threatened to shoot them. My mom called the AP's on our red phone(one of three in housing). We went to a wedding at our gardener's vilage, the kyber pass, and the bazaars. My dad never talked about what he did there. The only thing I knew is that he was in crypto-maintenance. It was only in the last few years prior to his death in 2005 that he spoke of any of what you did there. We went to Tinker AFB, Lackland AFB, and then he became a CWO in the army and went to Ft. Gordon, Vietnam, Frankfurt, and Vietnam again before retiring in 1974. I would love to hear from anyone who knew my dad or my mom Marion. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For may years I told my family that I drove a truck while in the service. For 29 years I have been selling truck equipment...go figure.

Quite a place. I do not remember which flight I was on and do not remember many of the people there. It might have been Able flight I was on. I was the barracks chief in the first floor of the barracks nearest the wall. My best friend there was a SSgt Cunningham. One day there was a raid by some Pakistani bandits who were stealing bicycles not locked up. I was called out to try and stop them and they all pointed their guns at me. When someone shouted out that I was the barracks chief, the bandit closest to me smiled and pointed to himself that he is chief also saying that he is taking the bicycles. The bicycles were tossed over the wall and the bandits disappeared with the chief waving at me. The AP's did no come to help, although one did show up just as the bandits were leaving and he looked around the corner of the barracks and then quickly disappeared. I have never forgotten that experience and watching those bandits walk on that glass covered wall. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
