Yo, Maybe I have already registered earlier. I was sent from Bremerhaven, Germany in March 1958 to help set up and make operational the site where we operated at the Air Strip. There were a few vans. We stayed at Dean's Hotel. What started as three months-TDY) ended up as 6 months due to a kurdish uprising in Iran and loss of support aircraft to take us back to Bremerhaven. The Shah was our "buddy" then. Things settled down and were able to go back in late September. I was amazed at how the site grew with pictures, etc.

Really enjoy reading all the comments on this site. I don't remember names very well from 40 some years ago. If anyone recognizes my name, I would like to hear from you. I worked one of the Operation shifts. Helped build up the football field. We started with touch but after I left, it changed to flag.

By the way, just finished the new book, "KBL". It was fictional but very close to real thing about getting Usama. Brings back a lot of memories of Pakistan.

Ned; I 2T'D to 6937th CG from 6950th SW in RAF Chicksands England. Got there in early Feb. '68 and was assigned "Dawg" trick as an X1. Played on flag football team as OL. Only name I can recall is Simon Marks who played on the line beside me. He was a "Cajun" from Laffeyette La. and had played some college ball at Southwestern La. U. I left Peshawar in early May '69 headed for the ZI. It was good to hear from an 'Ol "Dawg" that was there during my "reign".

When I first arrived at Badaber and Iwas assigned and work in the same office as Saleem and Bob Blackburn, worked some on the newspaper. Later they moved me to my own office in the reproduction and forms building. Remember many great times at the NCO Club where I ate most of my meals mostly because my barracks was just across the street from it. Enjoyed seeing the city of Peshawar. Did not see as much of the country as I would liked, received pictures from Saleem showing what I missed. Would love to hear from any one who was over there the same time I was and see where they are and what they are doing. I am retired as well as my wife. We have a house that we have just about rebuilt. If I new you or not would love hearing from. Wanted to go to the reunion in MD but doctors said I should fly right now.

I arrived about a month before the dependents did. I remember the outdoor theater and playing softball at night. I do remember the class six store and using the a/c unit for a fridge. I played football and remember playing against a guy that was the cook at the chow hall. I transferred in from Misawa, Japan and then transferred back to Japan when I left PAS.

Roy, You mean you have forgotten the "Frontier Inn?" In my picture section there is a photo of the front door. Myself and a friend took all of the GrapeNuts we could collect for a month or more, put them in a box and gave them to a guy that loved GN's for his birthday. There must have been 50 of the little boxes. I think a picture of him with GN boxes all him is there also.

Happy Holidays to all. Broke my foot in a midnight basketball game after a swing 46 years ago tomorrow night. Dispensary had one set of crutches on hand (youth size). Palms, forearms and ribcage rubbed raw within hours. Hobbled/hopped to the Thanksgiving spread at the chow hall before that next swing. Ah, those were the days.

I find it hard to believe that anyone wants to remember Peshawar. I saw a poster once that read, "Eat a live toad the first thing every morning, and you know the rest of your day will be better". Peshawar was my live toad. During the next 14 years of USAFSS service every where else was better, even Shemya. The most amazing thing to me is what Peshawar looks like on Google Earth today. What happened to that single cross road at Deans Hotel?

Congrat's to all those who served and survived.

Greg, Yes, names and faces have a way of losing association after 43 years. I think I have one of the Tape Guides from there, somewhere around the house. Have you seen the facebook page for the 6937th? Also, there is a new webpage coming online on 11/11: armedzilla.com. A timeline of Service. Enter info and it will show a timeline and, supposedly, link to others of the same time and place. It is active now, but not released publicly until then. And here is my page with a bunch of PAS photos.

Hey, Jim ...Sorry I don't remember a lot of the names from that time, but I do remember the equipment ...also remember the guys yelling "they're up!" , and spinning the dials to catch the signal..we had a plotter in that area at one time, which was used to track the path of the ferret missions they used to run, but I don't remember it being in use while I was there... I still get a kick out of the whole experience... it was unique, and a little "James Bond" at the time....Best to you and all the PAS gang.....

Formed a band and called it The Houserockers. Played at NCO club all the time. We were sent TDY to Kabul, Afghanistan to play for the Ambassador's ball held at the airport. At the time we were the only band anywhere around. Met Pat West in Mangla and married her in Tampa, Fl. in 1966. We are still happily married and living in Odessa, Fl., just north of Tampa. I am still playing the oldies with my band, The Satellites. www.thesatellitesband.com

It always interests me that the average American knows so little of how some of the world lives. 15 months in Peshawar certainly opened my eyes !! As one of the Peshawar vets said, " it was the experience of a lifetime, and I wouldn't want to relive even one second of it " !! Where's Bob Morey ?? Where's Dennis Mullendore ?? Where's all the rest of the guys who were there ? Best to all who served...

Going through this site has been a trip. I told my wife about the dead horse being turned into a tonga meat market and the naked guy who roamed around in town and she didn't believe me. I was only in Pashawar a short time and volunteered to go to Erzurum Turkey to get home a few monthes sooner. After leaving Pakistan I found out they were closing the base and I would have come home sooner if I'd stayed.

Left Peshawar early (12 months instead of 15) with a guarenteed reinlistment assignment back to Misawa, Japan. After two years more at Misawa, another damn remote tour to Sinop, Turkey. That was enough to convince me it was time to escape the Air Force.

When I got to Pakistan, we had to wear civilian clothes into town. We use to

Robert Addison (Baton Rough La). I went directly from Keesler to Pakistan.

I was only 17 years old when I got to Peshawar. It was a good experience being stationed in Pakistan.

I spent two years as regional Marine officer in Pakistan with the State Department and once visited Peshawar, 1977-79. There were still signs of the USAF presence in the shops in town.

I brought an SP600 with me and one of my Pakistani friends thought the Air Force left some behind from Peshawar.

The great work that the Americans took here is very much appreciable

job.I would definitely love to meet those great guys who, lived here

and let me tell you one-thing that this base is now with the Air force so it is very much possible that u guys can come here and i am very

Remember the bus ride in with married dependents and their reaction to "Nature Boy",the smell that greeted us fermented by the heat, spitting camels and cobra charmersoutside the base, poolside pinocle and beer at 8 in the morning hanging a mid. Spent many breaks at Mangla with the Calverts...terrific people. Work station was "MailTrain" among others...always fun when the "surf" came up. Have really enjoyed reading all the messages, especially from guys there when I was...try as I might can'tplace faces with the names...guess that's the price 46 years charges..many fun timesbut the expression was that Karachi was the anal aperture of the world and we were1100 miles up it. Was a 2 Tour SSgt...first tour was RAF Kirknewton, spent thelast few weeks there doing grunt work to close up shop. I worked the shift thatturned off the mission. Satellite technology closed a lot of the "listening posts".Rock on.....

What a trip. Arrived in Karachi during the Pak/India conflict in 1965. Creatively I managed to stay in Karachi for 17 days enjoying the good life of a young man living in a Palace (Shaheen Jalla)?with a bar, and loaded with woman every night. Hated leaving.Being creative once again, air force regulations permit a religious retreat. Two weeks in Europe out of Peshawar was a relief...many followed...I was a wild young man stationed in hell. For those of you who knew me, the court martial I was given, along with Bob Keelen, Alrick Knight and Steve Modl, and found guilty of, was over turned in Washington DC in 1968. All 8 members of the jury and the judge said they would have found us NOT GUILTY had we pleaded that way - that day.(we smoked local hashish)After an Honorable Discharge in 1967, I married a wonderful gal to whom we will celebrate our 45 th wedding anniversary in June, graduated Seton Hall University, had a great career and have been living in Arizona since 1972. What a trip - no body topped me!

I was sorry to have such short tour at Peshawar. I really did enjoy working at the CRC and shopping in Peshawar. Anybody remember "Nature Boy" who ran around the town naked as the day he was born?

From there I went to Wheelus AB Libya and only stayed there for 7 months before the Libyan government kicked us out of the country.

From Libya I transferred to Hamilton AB, Cal and found to my dismay that Hamilton had deactivated 2 weeks prior to my arrival. After 2 months I went to McClellan AB near Sacramento and immediately put in for 20 year retirement. All those PCS movements in such a short period of time took their toll.

I remember sitting outside of the old barrack that we lived in with the base commander's son and watching Santa arrived in a water buffalo drawn cart.I had two roommates. I slept in a single bed across the window during the Indian-Pakistani war.

Went on trips to Mangla Dam construction site and deliveredd the engagement ring to my roomie girlfriend after he had shipped out.

Can't forget the smell when I stepped off the plane in Karachi. I remember stopping at a place called "Theives City" on the trip to Kyber Pass. Will never forget that bus ride up and back. Been trying to get a mental picture of the proximity to Toro Boro and now the proximity of Peshawar to where Bin Laden was killed. Maybe someone can help? Can't find a map that helps with Theives City.

Too old to remember

292x1

Comments:

This is my first time to join the website. Lots and lots of memories: the flight from Charleston to Torrejon, to Dharain (?), to Karachi. A few days at a place in Karachi (Club Salateen ??) then PIA flight to Peshawar. I remember another airman on the bus ride from where we landed in Karachi to our lodging saying, with a forlorn look in his eyes, "I'd go AWOL, but where would I go!" Other memories include frequent trips to Mangla Dam, the India-Pak war, guard duty at the security compound where we were given carbines but no ammunition, poker games at the NCO Club, and the trip home. Great website.

Torn Tape Relay Station

291

Comments:

I wasn't a 2-T or in the6937th but in an AFCC unit that was responsible for the major relay station. Our barracks were just across from the pool where a cold Heineken was 25 cents. Played a lot of golf at the Peshawar golf course with Steve Stack whom I never heard from after I got shipped to Incirlik AB. See why I didn't make the AF a career? It was a long way from Vermont, my home up until then. If you played golf downtown, you had to remember "Dog Face" who was a regular caddy. Those ball boys were great at carrying a bad shot out of the rough with their toes. The Par 6 hole was the longest I ever played until playing Meadows Farm out in Locus Grove, VA. It has an 841 yard par 6. We also used to go downtown to Peshawar on Friday nights to watch movies on the roof of the American Counsel and I think their beer was even cheaper than PAS. And anyone who rode the buss downtown must remember seeing the old naked man who must have had elephantiasis in his privates. What a memory after 46 years!

I'm sure glad to find this site. I already found whereabouts and chatted with my first roomate at PAS, "Robert Desmarais" same tour date, section, and AFSC as mine. This made me realize how fast time flies. Before we chatted it seemed like a long time ago, now it seems like yesterday. I'd like to find Larry Kinchen and Seargent Robert Calhoon. 2nd and 3rd roomates. They're both different AFSC's then Desmarais and Myself. Neighbor room Teletype Guys, "Bob Massey" and "Al Beck" and I build and wrecked a few Pylon Airplanes. From someone returning, for 25c I bought a wing only plane and converted it to twin fox 15's. What a piece that was, it sounded like a rail on the dragstrip. I'd like to hear from Sgt. "Bob Masingill" the fast pitcher who won 43 and lost only 2 games.

Hi Gary,

I just discovered your website. Hope it is still up and running. I was at PAS the same time you were. I was assigned to Materiel (Supply). I didn't work in the compounds. If you were into sports I played flag football, softball, golf and bowled. I remember taking trips downtown and riding in those rickshaws. Also went to Kyber Pass for some shopping. We were told not to take photos along the way or to get out of our vehicle, but you know how young GI's pay attention. I was 24 at the time. I remember shots being fired when we would play night games. I remember the room Gary Powers stayed in. Also remember sitting in the stairwell at night looking over the wall and wondering if it would hold out the bad guys. All in all my memories are very positive.

If you get a chance, drop a line. You have a great site!!

Best part was getting out of there in 6-1/2 months and credit for a remote. Swat was fun, good camping on the river, though I don't think the locals are as friendly now since Taliban territory now. Landi Kotal (Thieves City) weird and what can you say about Kohat other than I wouln't shoot one of those. What was the name of the restraunt down town that had the starched napkins and good silverware? Water buffalo steaks were not bad, all things considered, but hope nobody else ordered the potato salad. The prize for ordering the potatoe salad was a 3 week vacation expense paid in the dispensorary and lost 15 lbs. Nothing like the PND.

Remember the base being built with the double brick walls to help with the heat. The gym was just being constructed along with the water tower that all the Paks thought was a missle or something. We had a laundry that was run by the Paks and they used to burn holes in the uniforms using their charcoal fired irons. Remember going to the movies taking your chair and sitting in an open field with a white board screen watching 16mm movies with the temp around 100 degrees (it had cooled down from 140.

Like to here from anyone that was there at the same time. Remember walking across the road for shift change to the compound. They tried to get a radio station going through the electric lines because we couldnt transmitt off the base because our music offended the Pakes.

I remember the hot summers and some very cold nights in the winter. The offensive odors

in the old city. I will never forget the day a cobra was under the water cooler in the

dining hall. IHTP writings on the walls leading into the dining hall, on the station

bulletin board, and finally on the water tank. Consequently, marching to breakfast

in uniform on days off until someone admitted to the water tank graffiti or finked on those

responsible. No one confessed and the marching order was lifted after a few weeks.

Would surely like to hear from anyone in the 2008th during my tenure.

Just signing in and see who all is still out there. Kind of getting to the stage in life where even the memories of Paky Land are pretty good and certainly unique.

Saw the song, "We gotta get outta this place" certainly brings back memories, the terms bleedin, hammer, figmo, gaf, hang day, even saw that Lt Stith is a doctor now. If my memory serves me he was on top of the patio cover in his boxers, a little under the weather with a garbage can as a shield while those on the ground hurled empty beer cans. I'm sure you remember the rusted out drink cans in the work snack bar. The water temp in the pool in the summer. Oh yeah, those were the days.

Hi all,

Hope all of you in the snow are being careful. Our collective group seems to have a lot of stuff from their PAS tours. This web site makes a valient effort at archiving material that can be easily gotten into digital form, but I hear of videos and various other items that require more sophisticated storage techniques. Should we be considering some way to archive all of this PAS stuff for generations to come? My efforts to locate any official repository of PAS records, etc., indicate the USAF Historical Agency has put all of the USAFSS related material in the control of whatever command is in charge in San Antonio. I know of no one who has had any success in getting access to those records. The command has no one assigned to performing the access control accept to lock it away. Presidents put their collected stuff in their library. Is it possible some library might be interested in collecting our stuff? Is this a totally dumb notion?

Still hoping to locate some guys that were there with me on Baker at same time. Have hooked up with John Evans and Bill Church in Ohio, Ron "Buje" Perry in N.J. and Bob "Woody" Slusser in Pa.

In response to previous post, I also remember the naked guy in Peshawar that used to roam around town. We called him "Crazy Willie", and if I remember correctly, about his only possession was an old blanket that he would wrap up in when it got a little cold. He used to love to make sure the ladies on the shuttle bus going to town would see him!!

Remember, other than my friends, the main thing that got me thru 15 months was ball, ball, and more ball. Whatever sport was being played, I was doing it. Of course, 42 years ago I was nothing but an athlete. My, how times have changed.

Really do hope that some old friend of mine (some, I'm ashamed to say, I can't even remember their names) will find this site and try to get in touch. All of you take care. We all share a common bond.

My first duty while awaiting a 203 slot was driving an AP van around base perimeter road (inside the wall) at night for a week or 2 just to keep busy - sort of "casual status" duty. Anyone else have that pleasure? Toted an unloaded M1 carbine - and no radio.

Our gang of 203's from Able flight are trying to find Al Larson, aka "Wide-Track" - one of the funnest and funniest guys on the flight. We've had a few mini-reunions, plus the big one in Lexington this past year. Hope everyone is healthy, wealthy and still wise after all these years.

Lots of memeories..some good, some not so good..The good memories are the guys I knew, and worked with..Morey, Piech, Mullendore, Gander, Wolfe, Ted Baird, and a few others. The boredom was one of the bad memories..Hard to fight it, but beer and poker helped a lot..also roaming the city of Peshawar. One time in the city,we were strolling alone the main street and heard a commotion up ahead..As we walked, we came upon a totally naked man walking towards us..!! Everybody just got out of his way, and he seemed unconcerned about it all.. we cracked up laughing....!! Only in Peshawar...I'm sure everybody remembers "nature boy" who used to expose himself to the Air Force bus as travelled into town..As I recall, he used to stand on a wall and show us all his "goods" as the bus passed...See, the military can be fun after all.Hah..!! Regards and best wishes to all who served....

I was with an initial group from Bremerhaven to set up site. There must have been a contingent before us. We set up concertina wire around the perimeter at the airfield.Five rows on bottom, then three rows, then two rows with one more on top. Used special gloves. Wwe worked out of truck vans and stayed at Deans Hotel. awe taped signals from missile shots. After I got back to Germany, Sputnik was launched. The Germans called out attempt to duplicate their feat as Sputternik. I hadn't been home for three years so I wasn't up to a re-enlistment talk. My four active duty was up in Dec.Our initial tour in Pweshawa was called a 3 month TDY which lasted 6 months due to a shortage of available aircraft which was being directed to help Iraq during a Kurdish uprising. I would like information on what qualification is needed to be awarded the USAF Outstanding Unit award with V device. any information would be appreciated.

Just checking in again to see if I can find anyone from USAFSS on Kelly. When I was sent to Peshawar it was called project Sand Bag. The locals who worked in supply used Ito meet us in town to escort us, underneath those long white shirts they were all armed. I might attend my first PAS reuinion in 2011.

Just received the message of the reunion October 7th in Maryland.I hope to make this one as something always came up on the other dates.I read Rob Smiths item on his Xmas in Pakistan and I do believe he was at our house during that period of time as the Paki's came to our house singing Christmas Carols and had empty Tide soap box's banging on them making noises. Many pictures taken and a lot of laughter to remember.

My mother Phyllis still remembers lots of good times on the base with the good boys that came to the house for many suppers. My father Art (deceased) was always on the base fraternizing with the members being ex Canadian Air Force. (Flt Lt.)

Hope everyone had a Merry Xmas and all the best in 2011.

Earlier this evening, January 8th, I was in the process of shaving when my phone rang. Someone on the other end asked it this was "Woody" Slusser? I have not been called "Woody" since the days I was stationed in Peshawar Pakistan. The call was coming from one of my Peshawar buddies, John Evans. I had not heard from John in 40 years. He said he had recently heard from Frank Price who was a mutual friend of ours while serving in Peshawar. I would like to hear from Frank if he gets to read this message. If anyone out there knows where Chuck Garis, Jerry Cruson, Lenny Iberg, Ned Wheland (mentioned in message 543), or Jim Mauldin might be, please let me know. I'm really enjoying the Website!

Stationed at Kirknewton prior to PAS with the 6952nd. Remember PAS as bone chilling and hot/humid. PAKS liked Americans then. However, excursion trips required a local armed guard because of bandits. Afghans & PAKS were not neighborly towards one another. Got close to the Russian border where we bought souvenirs (junk) some from the USSR. Movies projected on a portable screen hung on two posts outside. Bring your own chair & eats. No bomb threats then.

Hey Lee J. Patrick..... Sheridan was a good one....He asked me to take two guys out to guard a large hole in the wall on mids one time. Didn't want us to have ammo for the carbines, but relented when I objected. I first worked for SSGT Kirk, then a Tech SGT and I occasionally ran the section when the Tech retired. Sadly I don't remember many of the guys by name. Forty plus years can do that to memories! Do remember SSGTs James, O'donnell and Hutchinson.

Recently took the bull by the horns and did what I had to do to locate my three best over at PAS: Bill Church and John Evans, both from Ohio, and Ron (Buge Perry) from New Jersey. Planning on a mini reunion sometime this year. Last saw each other when we were young studs, and now we're middle aged grandfathers!!

Will never forget sidestepping the snake charmers going and coming from work at the Comm Center. Those guys probably got rich from us throwing coins at them.

Been looking at the postings, but haven't seen anyone but Bill Church that I remember. Memory is awful, and having trouble having someone's name just pop into my head. Hope I can meet a friend from those days on this site.

I remember all too well the Indo-Pak war; a BIG earthquake that woke me up as my bunk bed bounced across the floor in the barrick. I remember the total blackout on base and groping our way from the chow hall to ops for mids... in total darkness when you couldn't see your hand in front of your face.

Anyone remember the locals that were hired to put mud on the water towers to cut down on moonlight reflections?? It was supposed to make it harder for the Indian bombers to line up on Peshawar Airport. It had not rained in a month or two... but it rained the next day after the 'mudding' of the towers. Washed most of it off... LOL.

I also remember all the 'hang days' and beer calls... beer ball games, etc.

Good to be in touch with so many of you and to read your shared memories and see all the photos. I have some I will scan and upload in the future.

Regards to all...

Mike
